Take Charge Project

Funded through a grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Take Charge Project is a collaboration between three local not-for-profit agencies: Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.; Community Aids Network, Inc.; and Project Challenge of the West Coast, Inc. Our focus is on HIV/AIDS and substance abuse prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

HIV/AIDS does not discriminate. The epidemic continues to move into minority communities throughout the United States, including right here in our own community, yet African-American and Hispanic adolescents and adults have traditionally not had adequate access to needed HIV prevention and treatment services in conjunction with substance abuse services. There is a strong and significant link between substance abuse and HIV, but until the Take Charge Project began, there had not been strong coordination between outreach, testing, therapy, and a drug-free-lifestyle.

The Take Charge Project offers:
· Initial outreach and HIV testing · Outpatient substance abuse treatment · Intensive Case Management for individuals who are HIV-positive · Risk factor education · Individual and family community-based therapy
